Exploring Fragrance Varieties: Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Extrait, and Voile Formats Decoded

Perfumed products have been a part of human culture for centuries, evolving from simple aromatic oils to a diverse array of sophisticated fragrances. In the world of scents, there are several distinct types of perfumed products, each offering a unique experience in terms of concentration, longevity, and application. Here, we explore four popular types: Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Extrait, and the “Voile” formats.

  1. Eau de Parfum (EdP) Eau de Parfum is among the most popular types of perfumed products. Known for its higher concentration of fragrance oils, typically between 15% to 20%, EdP offers a richer and more intense aroma. This higher concentration not only provides a more pronounced scent but also ensures greater longevity, with the fragrance typically lasting anywhere from four to eight hours. Eau de Parfum is suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions, providing a balanced combination of intensity and subtlety.

  2. Eau de Toilette (EdT) Eau de Toilette is a lighter version of fragrance, with a concentration of about 5% to 15% fragrance oils. It is a popular choice for day wear, particularly in warmer climates, due to its lighter, more refreshing nature. EdT offers a subtle yet noticeable scent that usually lasts for about three to five hours. It is often considered a more casual and approachable type of fragrance, ideal for those who prefer a less overpowering scent.

  3. Extrait (also known as Parfum or Perfume Extract) Extrait, often referred to as Parfum or Perfume Extract, represents the highest concentration of fragrance oils in perfumed products, typically ranging from 20% to 40%. This intense concentration results in a deeply rich and long-lasting scent, with the fragrance enduring for up to 8 hours or more. Extrait is known for its depth and complexity, often revealing its layers of scent over time on the skin. Due to its strength and lasting power, it is usually applied in small, discreet touches to pulse points. Extrait is often considered the most luxurious form of fragrance, appealing to those who seek an immersive and enduring scent experience.

  4. Voile de Toilette (VdT) The “Voile” formats refer to a lighter, mist-like version of fragrances. The word “voile” is French for “veil,” suggesting a delicate, almost imperceptible layer of scent. These formulations typically have a lower concentration of fragrance oils, similar to or even lighter than Eau de Toilette, and are designed to be lightly sprayed over the body or clothing. The Voile format is ideal for those who prefer a subtle hint of fragrance, creating a barely-there, fresh sensation.  Voiles are commonly made using IPM, a non-flammable alternative to Ethanol which can give them an advantage over other fragrance types.

Each type of perfumed product offers a unique way to experience fragrance. Whether it’s the lasting impression of an Eau de Parfum, the light touch of an Eau de Toilette, the  intensity of Extrait, or the delicate mist of a Voile format, there is a style to suit every preference and occasion. With the wide range of options available, the art of choosing and wearing perfume remains a deeply personal and enjoyable experience.

A Rough Guide to Perfume Concentrations

Given the information above, we can create a rough guide to concentrations for each of the different types of perfume.  We have also added an estimate of longevity for each.  However it must be noted that each fragrance oil or perfume will be unique and so this is more of a starting off point for formulation rather than a recipe.  It is also important to check the IFRA guidance for your fragrance oils as these will set strict limits on the amounts that can be used for a particular application.
