Greetings Fragrance Crafters,

blu-hya.jpg (4079 bytes)I thought it would be fun to learn each month about a particular flower or spice. This month's choice will be Hyacinth. The cultivation of Hyacinth to produce essential oils have been replaced with synthetic fragrance oils. Jasmine, Rose, Lilac and Lily Of The Valley oils combined with an herbal-green note will produce a Hyacinth note. The Hyacinth absolute that is produced comes from Holland which accounts for 90% of its production. A concrete and absolute results from the solvent extraction of the flowers. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the absolute. The resulting oil is green or reddish-brown. It's both delicious and powerful. The fragrance carries a suggestion of Styrax. Fragrances containing Hyacinth include, Givenchy 111, Nino Cerutti and White Linen. Since Old Spice shaving soap is no longer made, several customers have requested a substitute.

My version:

SPICY SHAVING SOAP

12 oz. opaque soap base
1 Tblsp. Cocoa Butter
1 1/2 Tblsp. Witch Hazel
6 drops Caramel Colorant
1 tsp. Vitamin E oil
10 drops Rainforest (amber oil)
20 drops oil of Cinnamon
10 drops oil of Allspice

Melt soap base in microwave, add cocoa butter, dissolve and add witch hazel, vitamin E and colorant. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then add essential and fragrance oils. Pour into a standard size muffin pan or individual custard cups. Allow to harden. The custard cups are a perfect container if you do not have a shaving mug to fill.

GOOEY SWAMP SLIME

8 oz. Antibacterial soap base
2 oz. Liquid Glycerin
10 drops each, oil of Lemon and oil of Lime
2 drops each Yellow and Green Colorant

Combine all the ingredients and fill a jar or bottle. Add a few plastic flies or a frog for additional fun. Kids love the stuff and it's a great hand soap or add 2-3 Tblsp. to bath water for sudsy fun.

LOVE POTION

1/2 c. Glycerin
2 tsp. Honey
1/2 tsp. Vanilla Flavoring oil
1/2 tsp. Raspberry Flavoring oil
1 drop Red Colorant

Blend ingredients and bottle. This is an edible mixture and it heats up if you blow on it after rubbing on the skin!
